Cosmos: A Spacetime Odyssey is a 2014 American science documentary television series.[2] The show is a follow-up to the 1980 television series Cosmos: A Personal VoyageThe show is presented by astrophysicist Neil deGrasse Tyson, who, as a young high school student, was inspired by Sagan.

Cosmos: A Personal Voyage is a thirteen-part television series written by Carl SaganAnn Druyan, and Steven Soter, with Sagan as presenter. It covers a wide range of scientific subjects, including the origin of life and a perspective of our place in the universe. Cosmos: A Personal Voyage has been considered highly significant since its broadcast; David Itzkoff of The New York Times described it as “a watershed moment for science-themed television programming”.[4]

VOLUNTEERING

We are now planning for Yule.  Volunteer opportunities at this time include

  • Help to sort out the decorations on Dec 16th from 6:30 – 8:30 PM
  • Sign up to be a Fire Keepers at the vigil and making sure the bonfire is kept going in a safe manner. (You will have to take the tutorial)
  • Winter Solstice set up helpers in various locations on the day
  • Being in the Winter Solstice ritual
  • Helping to create a mini ritual for the Yule Vigil to bless the courtyard before the church remodel

Baby Hats in October

October is baby hat month! We will collect all your knitted, crochetted, or sewn hats any time all month. Give them to any Mystic Grove member on Sundays or drop them by the church office with a clearly labled note.

Want to make hats in a group? Join us for this teaching craft circle! We will be making simple baby hats to donate to charity based on this tutorial:
Non-sewers and sewers alike can join in! Fabric, sewing machines, and sewing buddies provided.
A good opportunity for the non-sewer to learn how.

Monthly Business Meeting – Sept 4th

Thanks to those who attended! We are on track in all areas. We are mapped out through December but will take movie and craft circle suggestions for Spring semester.

The next meeting is October 2 at 12:30 PM in Room 9 at First Unitarian Church of Orlando.

Sewing Workshop — Sept 16 & 17th

Please email to tell us which class you want a spot in and so we have enough shared supplies on hand. Cost for the weekend is $10. While space allows nobody will be turned away for lack of funds.

  • Beginner Class — 3 Seam Cloak. (PDF Directions available.) 
  • Intermediate Class — T Robe / Tunic
  • Advanced Class — Simplicity 5840 pattern for a hooded and sleeved cloak.

Non-sewers welcome.  We have sewing buddies and sewing machines to loan for the day.

Mabon Ritual — Sept 24th

Please bring your percussion instruments and you potluck dish!

Tarot Class Registration is Open. 

Please email to reserve you spot.  Cost is $30 for 10 classes. It’s ok if you cannot make them all or if you want to be an online student via Facebook. We do need to know how many books to order and how many study guides to make for people.

Cloaks & Robes Weekend Workshop

lady j cloakJoin us for this special weekend sewing workshop and learn how to create your own cotton garments for pagan ritual, Halloween, or just for fun!

WHO

Non-sewers and experienced sewers are both welcome.

We have a limited number of loaner sewing machines. BYO machine and extension cords if you can.

# of Spots and Brief Description Non-sewer, or beginner interested in making a simple hooded cloak from a sheet.

10+ spots

Already did Class 1, beginner, or intermediate sewer.

Learn how to make a simple T-robe with no hood.

8 spots

Already did Class 1 or 2 or a sewer ready to learn to work from a store pattern.

Make a hooded, sleeved cloak. We are using Simplicity 5840. (provided)

6 spots

Supplies Needed.

Please wash and dry all fabrics before class.

66″ x 96″ twin sheet
(for small kids)81″ x 96″full sheet
(for big kids/ adults)

1 spool of 1/2” to 1” wide ribbon to match your cloak

2 ½ or 3 yards (if you are very tall) of 54 to 60 inch fabric, any type. Just make sure that 54 or 60 inches goes around the hips and tummy.

Fabric shopping with teacher is on Sunday Sept 11 after Coffee Hour. Meet at 12:30 in Gore Hall stage area of First Unitarian.

7 and 7/8” yards of 45” wide cotton OR a King Size sheet.

All classes are $10 for the weekend.

Early bird registration is in person on Aug 28 at the Opportunity Fiesta.

Regular registration begins Aug 29, 2016  by email until all spots are filled. There are roughly 24 spots. While space allows, nobody will be turned away for lack of funds.
